Nicaragua Mission Trip
May 1, 2012
When Columbus Ophthalmology Associates physician, Dr. Robert Derick, was offered an opportunity to travel to Nicaragua as part of a mission trip he knew what he needed to do. Having already served on mission trips to Nicaragua, Jamaica and India, Dr. Derick didn’t think twice. “It’s amazing when you can help a patient that would otherwise be blind, and perform a surgery that can change their whole life in a matter of minutes,” explained Derick.
In February, Dr. Derick boarded a plane with six other colleagues and more than 1000 lbs. of surgical equipment in tow. Much of the surgical equipment was purchased by the physicians, while other supplies were borrowed or donated. Their mission was to restore the eyesight of poor indigent people in Managua, Nicaragua by performing modern cataract surgery. For many Nicaraguan patients, this team of American healthcare professionals was their only hope at ever seeing again.
“The one state eye hospital in Nicaragua had to close several years ago because of an epidemic of a serious eye infection (endophtalmitis),” said Derick. “So not only does the area have a poor underserved population, but the situation is compounded because of a closure of the one place where people can get eye care. It created a huge backlog of preventable blindness.”
For four long days the team of four surgeons and six nurses performed 150 cataract surgeries and four glaucoma surgeries. “Going in you know you are in for four long hard days, but when you are finished you have a great sense of accomplishment and a real bond develops with your fellow teammates,” said Derick. Dr. Derick felt that seeing patients’ reactions the day their eye patches came off created some of the most memorable moments of the trip. “There was a sense of amazement and joy when you take the patch off. There were a lot of tears and hugs – it’s spiritual in a way,” stated Dr. Derick.
