Comprehensive Eye Care at COA

Routine eye exams are essential to maintaining eye health, and are also an important part of overall health. During your comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will thoroughly examine the health of your eyes and will also have the opportunity to detect certain potentially serious eye conditions or vision issues early. Some conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, may not be symptomatic in their early stages, when treatment is most effective at preventing future vision loss. Other conditions that are not related to your vision, like diabetes and high cholesterol, may also be detected during a routine eye exam.

What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Examination?

A comprehensive eye examination usually takes about one hour, and patients experience no pain or discomfort during this process. During this examination, your eye doctor will conduct a series of tests to evaluate your vision and the health of your eyes.

Tests commonly included in a routine eye exam include:

  • Visual acuity
  • Retinal examination (with pupils dilated)
  • Visual field tests
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Refraction test
  • Tonometry (a test of the pressure within the eye)
  • Keratometry (measurement of the curvature of the cornea)

How Often Should You Have Your Eyes Examined?

Even if you aren’t bothered by poor vision, it is important to undergo regular eye examinations. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, adults should undergo routine eye exams with the following frequency:

Under 40: Every 5 – 10 years
40 – 54: Every 2 – 4 years
55 – 64: Every 1 – 3 years
65 or older: Every 1 – 2 years

It is important to note that some individuals who have certain eye conditions, health concerns, or risk factors may be asked to undergo eye exams more frequently.1
