Art & Science: Dr. Orlando’s Great Passions

Last Updated:

Many patients have asked about the art work that I have done and displayed in our clinics.  They include landscapes as well as contemporary works as my style has evolved over the years. I began to paint to fulfill a humanities requirement at Gannon University where I received my B.S. in Chemistry. The colors in nature as well as the changes in light from one season to the next have always fascinated me and perhaps influenced my decision to become a cataract surgeon. My goal as an artist is to have the viewer escape with me to a favorite place and stimulate a happy memory of a special occasion.  People ask me the “where” in my landscapes but most are a combination of images from many years of exploring the less traveled villages and country settings far from the crowds.  These special scenes have filtered into my subconscious so that I can work from a blank canvas with the occasional sketch or photo serving as a guide.  Visual images and color are very important to me both as a surgeon and as a painter  It is indeed an honor to be able to restore the colors to my patients world and share with them the many textures and colors from my works of art.
