Thursday, October 13 is World Sight Day, which was created by the The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) to raise awareness on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment.
Did you know that 80 percent of blindness is avoidable (preventable or treatable)? That means four out of every five people’s visual impairment is avoidable. At Columbus Ophthalmology Associates, our mission is to preserve, restore and enhance vision by providing the highest quality medical and surgical care to our patients. Read below to learn more about how to preserve your vision and how we’ve helped others in Central Ohio and beyond. Making an appointment to see your eye doctor regularly is key to ensuring your eyes are healthy. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease should get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40. Direct sunlight can be very damaging to the eyes over time, and wearing sunglasses can help delay the formation of cataracts and also can protect against retinal damage. Studies have directly linked smoking to numerous health problems, including Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which damages the macula that allows you to see centrally. In addition to working with Central Ohio patients, COA doctors have also helped others around the world to restore their vision. Dr. Derick has also served on medical mission trips to Nicaragua, Jamaica and India. Watch the video below to hear more about his experiences.
1. Visit your eye doctor regularly
2. Wear sunglasses.
